Community Capacity of Ecotourism Attractions in Remote Villages in the Upper Northern Region of Thailand

Abstract

This research was undertaken to (1) study the contexts of remote villages in the upper northern region of Thailand; and (2) examine the community capacity of ecotourism attractions of remote villages in the upper northern region of Thailand. The research was a qualitative approach which used focus group and in-depth interviews with stakeholders related to community-based ecotourism in Nan province in the upper northern region of Thailand. The results found that two remote villages of the Huaypaan community and the Maneepruek community have significant capacity of ecotourism resources that can make these villages attractive tourist features. As well as natural attractions in the area there were cultural features of interest as well as the hospitality of communities generally. Natural attractions were abundant and related to the ecosystems and biodiversity of the area which are a magnet for eco-tourists. The ecotourism attractions in the community forests had some potential but there was a lack of sustainable tourism standards due to inefficient tourism management and a lack of knowledge of ecotourism management. It was found that many local communities were interested in developing their tourism resources and ecotourism attractions. As a result, a number of knowledge transfer activities were conducted to increase local knowledge, skills and confidence of the communities for development of their ecotourism potential. The research findings have led to guidelines for the communities for developing ecotourism.
