The Role of Landscape Aesthetics in Tourism: Case Studies Focusing on Rural Tourism in Hungary

Abstract

Scenic landscapes determine travel decisions and influence tourism experience. In addition, the aesthetic value of landscapes and tourism as cultural ecosystem services contribute the well-being of people. Therefore, it is needed to examine their interconnection. The study focuses on the relationship between rural tourism offer and landscape aesthetics, and aims to reveal whether the areas characterized by rural accommodation have a higher landscape aesthetic value. Among the objective factors determining landscape experience, we also examined relief and land cover separately that is particularly relevant for recreation. As a sample area, besides Hungary, the Danube Bend priority tourism development area was selected, which has significant importance regarding landscape features relevant to the study and was designated along new territorial boundaries in 2017. As the first phase of the research, based on personal preferences, an online questionnaire survey and the GIS approach were used to map the topographic, the land cover and the landscape aesthetic values of the sample areas. Subsequently, hypothesis testing was used to explore the differences between rural tourism supply and landscape values both in Hungary and in the Danube Bend. Our results reveal, that places with rural tourism offer can be characterized by higher aesthetic values, which is an important promotional marketing and tourism development aspect. Analysis of the Danube Bend points that the higher aesthetic value of landscapes is not only determined by the elevation, but land cover is also a key factor.
