Home Gardening and Stress Level of Working Adults in the National Capital Region

Abstract

As stress continues to be prevalent among working adults in the National Capital Region (NCR), this study investigates the potential difference between home gardening on stress levels. Employing a quantitative approach with a descriptive-comparative design, the research analyzes and compares stress levels among individuals who engage in home gardening. The methodology involves collecting data from 300 respondents who are working adults, utilizing structured questionnaires, specifically the Perceived Stress Scale, to gather information on home gardening practices and self-reported stress levels. Statistical analyses are employed to identify significant differences in stress levels between the groups. The research findings reveal that majority of the respondents in the NCR engaging in home gardening are predominantly middle-aged females, employed in blue-collar jobs, and participate in gardening activities 2-3 times a week in urban settings. The frequency of gardening varies across age groups, with middle-aged adults having the highest daily engagement. Female respondents and blue-collar job holders exhibit a higher propensity for gardening, particularly in urban settings. Interestingly, the overall stress levels among the respondents are relatively low, with an overall weighted mean of 16.29. Furthermore, the study reveals significant differences in perceived stress levels based on age, gardening frequency, and type of home gardening. However, no significant differences were observed in perceived stress levels based on gender or type of job. These conclusions contribute valuable insights into the demographics and gardening practices of working adults, emphasizing the potential positive influence of home gardening on stress levels and suggesting further research and intervention.
