Government Obstacles in Developing Maritime Tourism: Case Study in Samalona Island, Indonesia

Abstract

Maritime tourism plays an important role in Indonesia’s economic potential, especially Makassar City in South Sulawesi. Although Indonesia has become a popular destination for tourists, heavy promotion of major tourist destinations often obscures the potential of smaller islands which have unique attractions. Makassar City has a number of small islands that offer stunning natural maritime beauty such as Lae-Lae Island, Kayangan Island, Samalona Island, Gusung Tallang Island, and Kodingareng Keke Island. The focus of this paper is Samalona Island. Maritime tourism development on Samalona Island is still limited and not yet optimal, especially in terms of infrastructure and environmental preservation. Apart from that, the lack of collaboration involving the industrial world in developing the entrepreneurship sector is also an indicator that causes the tourism sector in Indonesia to be less than optimal in generating profits.
