Immigrant Youth - Intersection of Homelessness, Victimization - Principles for Change

Abstract

Immigration cases involving youth are even more complicated and implicate sensitive issues beyond those encountered in adult cases. How the youth navigate the migratory transition will in a large part determined by a constellation of factors associated with pre-migration circumstances. With sharp increases in the numbers of unaccompanied immigrant youth entering the United States, state courts and victim advocates play a critical role in these youth protections. This paper discusses the range of legal and justice issues that immigrant youth face such as their own illegal behaviors and involvement in the criminal justice system, but also their experiences as victims of crimes. In addition, it explores youth’s access to legal and social remedies and the challenges of integrating into American mainstream.
