Exploring Narratives and Life Experiences of Women with Public Maternity Policies in Chile: A Qualitative Study of Mothering

Abstract

This study delves into narratives on maternity, social policies and gender inequalities in Chile, with the aim of understanding the impact of upbringing and care on women’s lives and their relationship to maternal support policies. Inequalities faced by women in Chile are explored and described. Some of the research questions addressed are: How do these inequalities affect the practices and representations of daily life of mothers in Chile? How is support perceived through the institutional interventions in which you have participated? The diversification of the practices and norms that shape the transitions to maternity are ambivalent, suggesting that the course of life of women in Chile is being individualized, but that it is not a uniform cultural change, but rather partial and fragmented, and significantly conditioned by the social structure and public policies implemented, in early childhood. With a qualitative research approach, 24 semi-structured interviews were conducted in three macro zones in Chile, exploring the experiences and life stories of mothers who are users of maternal public policies. The research addresses the characterizations made in the literature on maternity, the public policies to support maternity in Chile, and how the experiences lived and the narratives of women represent these practices. The findings highlight the inequalities faced by women and their perception of support through institutional interventions. The study also examines the diversification of the practices and norms that shape the transitions to maternity, reflecting an ambivalent and fragmented cultural change significantly conditioned by social structure and public policies.
