Group Think and Migratory Thought: Revisiting the Events of Jonestown

Abstract

This paper focuses on exploring the concept of migration as far as thought. The power of Group Think has been experienced worldwide - with the most recent example being that of the COVID-19 debacle. The term itself was coined by Irving Janis in 1972 and became prominent in George Orwell’s 1984 (published in 1949) publication. The concept of Group Think is a concept that was seen in the establishment of the People’s Temple and Jonestown, which led to the Jonestown Massacre. Questions that will be explored are as follows; “What is the role of resilience against Group Think? How does Group Think Form? How do false narratives travel?
