Political Ideologies and Migration Policies: Analysis of Political Parties in Turkey

Abstract

Political ideology consists of a systematic approach and assumptions about certain political, economic and socio-cultural issues. Migration, on the other hand, is the process of movement of people, either individuals or groups, from one place to another. For states, migration policies consist of decisions and practices that determine the basic approaches to controlling and managing human movements. Recently, with the widespread movement of people between countries, it has become more important to reveal what influences the perspective on this situation. When we accept migration as a field of study, it is seen that studies on migration generally deal with the relations between societies and the state’s policy-making processes regarding migration. Political parties are among the most important influential factors affecting the state’s policy making. In addition to the formation of social structure and national security approach of political parties, their approach to migration policy is also very important. The subject of the research is the migration policies of political parties in the Turkish parliament and the ideological foundations of these policies. The research analyzes the migration policies of political parties in terms of their ideological approaches. In this way, it is aimed to reveal the relationship between political parties’ attitudes towards migration and the ideological values and principles in which they position themselves. Whether the ideologies of the parties cause a differentiation in the formation of their migration policies is investigated through document analysis method.
