Healthcare workers, instructors and publishers must find ways to communicate with clients using information they understand, while explaining medical terminology. Graphic medicine works may offer unique and beneficial ways to learn about medical language and how it relates to the very personal journeys regarding illness, disease and aspects of mental and physical wellbeing Graphic medicine includes comic strips, pamphlets, one-page handouts or books about health, health care, and healthcare disparities. Graphic medicine increases health literacy rates and studies show clients prefer the use of comics to explain aspects of a health journey. Comics provide text and pictures, which increases the brain’s perception and allows for easier memory recall. Comics appeal to different types of learners, reluctant/poor readers and cross language or cultural barriers at times. This workshop will introduce several types of affordable graphic medicine, including books, pamphlets, self-made, one-page comics, games and more to show how these may be used in libraries, clinics, schools and other areas. Workshop attendees will learn how to use these for teaching purposes to make learning enjoyable for all ages and appealing to diverse learners and locations. Graphic medicine spans disciplines such as history, health, psychology, sociology and others, while also extending into aspects of social justice.
