Feminism and Student Political Activism: A Brazilian Case Study

Abstract

Currently, women have stood out on the world political scene as protagonists of the most diverse social movements. Among these, the transit of women activists and feminist agendas stands out among the various struggles taken over by the student movement. The study of the contemporary student movement makes it possible to understand how the plural political forces arising in democratic contexts have been restructured in their social bases. The research, therefore, analyzes how female protagonism occurs and how female leaders enter a space of political leadership. The empirical investigation, carried out by the central director of students at the second largest Brazilian university, was based on how the relations between the members are established within this movement. It investigated the profile of activism disseminated in these spaces, what are the different conceptions of feminisms that operate, what positions do these women occupy and if they participate in political parties. The importance of this research is justified by the fact that there are few Brazilian case studies that analyze the main representative instances of the student category from a gender perspective.
