Unionism and Feminism: An Analysis of One of the Largest Unions in Latin America

Abstract

Since 1970 in Brazil, there has been an increase in the participation of women in the labor market and in the union environment. Despite this, the insertion of agendas directly related to the demands of working women remains a challenge for unionism today. Based on this observation, this research analyzes how the connection between unionism and feminism took place during the VII Conference of Women of the Union of Official Education of the State of São Paulo (APEOESP), held on May 4 and 5, 2019. The methodology consists of documentary analysis of the final resolutions of the Conference, in systematization of the field diary, the result of participant observation during the Conference and analysis of the result of the 133 questionnaires applied at the time, seeking to understand what were the guidelines considered more important by union teachers and how they relate labor demands to feminist agendas. The importance of this research is justified by the fact that there are few Brazilian case studies studies on teacher unionism from a gender perspective, especially from a union that is considered one of the largest unions in Latin America.
