The Antisocial Element in the Culture of Psychotherapy

Abstract

Psychotherapy has become the dominant factor and guide in the interpersonal behaviors of people in American Society, replacing traditional societal norms as well as religious teachings to become the dominant interpersonal ideology. This has been accomplished, on the one hand, through the popularly embedded rules and axioms of psychological theories in the daily lives of people, and on the other hand, through the ubiquitous practice of psychotherapy on one and all people and for all possible problems and issues of daily life. The outcome is a strong shift toward individualism in a society that already prides itself for its individualistic character. The unfortunate result may be an excessive swing of present American society away from the collective spirit necessary for a well-functioning society,
