Abstract
Regional and urban economic strategy adopted by Mexico goes back since its industrialization process in early XX century, which features, a centralized type of economic model, stemming from its colonial legacy centered around its major metropolitan área, Mexico City. Which trough time became the nation´s greatest economic and political power. Linking regional and urban growth throughout Mexico to political decisions coming from this center. Which largely explains why public and private investments oriented to inner Mexico’s economic growth were greatly influenced not only by the ruling class decisions but as well by private investors’s profit interests, especially, those close to this ruling class with complete disregard to its spillover effects and myriad externalities inflicted to the economy and its population, such as poverty, unemployment, income maldistribution, environmental costs, etc.,within regions and major cities vis-á-vis an everlasting, passive and corrupt Mexican State characterized by its lack of social responsibility to promote a sound balance between growth and population wellbeing in Mexico. On this regard, although globalization process, has fostered the country’s economic growth, paralleling, has reinforced its traditional imbalances and implications derived from the implementation of a neoliberal strategy adopted by Mexican State during last four decades. Under this context, this paper examines the regional and urban strategy adopted by Mexican State during this time, attempting to demonstrate its failure and implications and the need to reorient it towards a more balanced, social- inclusive and sustainable one in coming years. Time horizon for this analysis ranges the period 1980-2018.
