US immigrants and Native Heritage Sustainability: An Exploration of the Legal, Ethical, and Social Implications of the Immigration Process

Abstract

Eliciting document and literature-based research this study focuses on the role of heritage in the life of the American immigrant. The purpose of this discourse is to contribute to the research-based comprehension and continuous progress of immigrant advancement initiatives by addressing the following questions: (1) What can be understood through current literature about how the legal, ethical, and social process of seeking a new national identity may effect one’s ability to nurture their native identity? (2) What initiatives can be made to encourage sustaining immigrants’ indigenous culture while taking on a new national one? (3) What are the potential collateral effects differing levels of assimilation has on immigrants’ sustainability of heritage? This paper critically explores these concepts and stimulates further interdisciplinary scholarship on this topic.
