Cultural Adaptation among Iranian Immigrants in Germany: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

Due to globalization, interaction between different cultures has been raised in a variety of political, economic, social and educational sectors. Alongside, scholars motivated to study the new concept of intercultural communication for better understanding of conflicts, schema, stereotypes, and sensitivity between cultures. Moreover, they tried to introduce some theoretical frameworks to manage anxiety in adapting with a new culture. Recently, the number of Iranian intended to live, study or work in European countries has significantly increased. Germany is considered as the main destination for immigration, despite of their unfamiliarity with German language. Currently, two main foreign languages studies in Iran are Arabic and English. Except difficulty in learning a new foreign language, it is likely to be some other factors that prevent Iranian immigrants from integrating into German culture. On the other hand, some positive features may facilitate the process of adoption. Hence, this study aimed to identify main factors which Iranian are involved in adopting German culture. To achieve this goal, several deep interviews are gathered from Iranian immigrants in Germany through a qualitative study approach. Despite the lack of generalization in qualitative studies, it is expected that the results of this study may be helpful in intercultural communication studies and how Iranian immigrants can benefit more in their new accepted culture.
