Street Musicians at Ermou Street, Athens: Music Performance as Survival Strategy - an Ethnographic Approach

Abstract

This research is based on fieldwork we carried out during 2020 at Ermou Street in Athens, as part of a wider research program. We attempt to describe and analyze the daily performance practices followed by street musicians performing in Ermou Street, a historical pedestrian street in the centre of Athens, rich in shops of various kinds, and popular among locals and tourists who enjoy strolling there. We examine the kinds of music these musicians play and look at the ways in which their performances are integrated into a wider system of survival strategies. Our paper also investigates the challenges we faced and the research methods we employed while conducting fieldwork among these street musicians.
