Abstract
As the role of physicians continues to evolve beyond their medical skills, and into leadership responsibilities, the need for evidence-based leadership development in healthcare becomes increasingly important. Although leadership scholars and social scientists frequently contribute to advancements in theory and empirical evidence on leadership effectiveness, academics in healthcare criticize a lack of leadership knowledge that is relevant in the medical context (Lees & Armit, 2018). In a recent commentary published in Academic Medicine, Myers, Sutcliffe and Farrari (2019) acknowledge that medical leadership is suffering from a reluctance to adopt insights on leadership from other researchers. In this focused discussion, scholars will exchange ideas about current approaches to leadership, their implications for healthcare, and how the two can be reasonably bridged to avoid “reinventing the wheel”.
