Abstract
This study offers a critical assessment of the first phase of rural land restitution in post-apartheid South Africa. The Restitution of Land Rights Act (RLRA) of 1994 aimed to give urban and rural areas back to its ‘original’ (black) owners or occupants or their descendants. The study investigates the complicity of a contested rural land claim. The study is structured into a historical prologue, specifics of the claim, archival research, the views of the landowners, and the unfolding of the process. Specific reference is made to case of Krelingspost in a peri-urban area.
