Media and Television Literacy of Anadolu University Open Education Students

Abstract

The use of the media as an educational tool, especially in America and Europe, has become widespread in every country during the twentieth century. Media literacy can be expressed as the use of media in education. It covers the ability of receiving the information on television, newspaper, and internet for value creation. According to scientific studies, television, which is the most influential broadcast media, has become an integral part of social life of people. Based on the fact that young people devote about nineteen percent of the year to watching television, a study is planned to determine the control power of television and media on young people. Anadolu University uses all the technology to teach students in Open Education Faculty with the latest scientific achievements. Anadolu University Open Education students receive e-books, internet access to recorded courses, mock-up exams and also there is a TV channel that broadcast the important and difficult courses. Open Education is a unique experience since the students are from all the corners of Turkey with a wide range of ages (from 18 to 75). Therefore, a study with Open Education faculty students allows us to get opinions from wide range of people with many different characteristics whose main goal is to gain university degree. In this study, the results of the survey with open education faculty students are given in detail and implications of the results on how to use media in open education in Turkey is discussed.
