A Study on the Public Health Environment for the Promotion of Community Health: Focusing on the Status of Regional Public Hospitals

Abstract

Health is a right and social interaction that should be guaranteed as a basic human right from birth to death. The health, which is not ensured means a result of the failure of the health care system to fully reflect human’s overall life and relationships, and it should be taken as an urgent task for public institutions to directly start acting and solving. The health care system in Korea is very necessary to enhance public health care to use essential medical services without discrimination, as the gap in health levels, such as medical accessibility and mortality among regions, has increased due to private supply of health care services, the concentration of medical resources in major cities and metropolitan area. Especially, the local health care system has been weakened, and it is the lack of continuing health care, generating regional gaps in health. Although the functions and roles of local health care providers within the community are very important, they are generally insufficient to perform their roles. This study suggest to the Regional Public Hospitals to actively respond to changes in the public health care environment and provide basic data to find the direction and basis needed to build the capacity and physical environment for improving community health. It aims to identify the social, physical and environmental status of the community supported by the Regional Public Hospitals and make suggestions on its role and function in public health care.
