Profile and Training Needs of the Teachers of Deaf Children in Venezuela: Expert Considerations

Abstract

This work presents research conducted with experts in the area of hearing-impaired pupils, regarding the importance of the ongoing training that is needed for the teachers who are working to educate deaf children in Venezuela. This is the result of a descriptive study, with a non-experimental design, which uses a qualitative method of research. The results presented, as with the discussion of the same, arise from the analysis made of the data obtained in the interviews, followed by the data encoding process, and the application of the AQUAD qualitative analysis computer programme. It comes to the conclusion that the teacher needs to realize the importance of honesty and perseverance, along with developing their creative approach. The teacher must have a strong conviction to their strengths, be motivated as well as well informed of the changes that are taking place with regard to the education of the deaf. New educational trends, the teacher’s professional experience, along with the teacher’s values and presentation all play important roles. Furthermore, the teacher requires training within the deaf community. This training should consist of strategies of communication, which include reading and writing within deaf society. Being a successful sign language teacher includes knowledge of a second language in order to provide the service of a successful bilingual sign language educator. The methodologies of second language teaching along with an innovative approach prove to be successful.
