Abstract
The escalada is present in most of the brazilians TV news programs. It is the audience’s first contact with the information program. It is, also, the created moment to hold viewers’ attention highlighting what is important in that edition, and thus retain the news consumer until the end of the program. This paper explores this format ,known in technical jargon as ‘escalada’ (something like “news envelope “ in english), from the analysis of the same edition (June 5, 2019) of the five television news programs broadcast to all Brazil by TV Globo: Hora 1 da Notícia, preseted from 4am; Bom Dia Brasil, from 8am; Jornal Hoje, from 13:30; Jornal Nacional, from 20:30; and Jornal da Globo, aired around midnight. It is possible to verify how much time of the newscast is earmarked to the headlines; what subjects are selected to be part of the ‘escalada’; and, based on semiotic, to evaluate the indicator and symbolic factors of the main subjects that are highlighted. This is a methodologically supported research at the junction of content analysis, which happens at the first moment and follows to phenomenology. It is possible to make a deeper observation to understand how the elaboration this element that journalists consider an important moment for the viewer’s captivation during the news program.
