Implementation of Pancasila as a Key Factor in Suppressing the Spread of Terrorism: Epitome of Tolerance and Moderation

Abstract

Terrorism has posed a threat to almost every state in the international community for decades as of now. The ways of recruiting people are not just directly pulling people to join, but also by spreading their values, their doctrine through the media. The nature of people, the sense of belonging, the feeling of being the same race or same religion trigger people’s sympathy to the cause. It causes even ordinary people to become extremely faithful in a sudden, as though they are reaching an epiphany. They don’t need to join the organization, but they feel the need to fight for their cause, even as far as to become a “lone wolf” and decide to commit terror acts. Pancasila contains the value of “believe in God”, yet it also emphasizes the need for just and civilized humanity, unity, the importance of democracy and social justice. Pancasila encourages the practice of tolerance and moderation, hence radicalism and extremism are greatly discouraged. Thus, the concept of Pancasila can be used as a significant key in suppressing radicalism doctrine which leads to terrorism. The purpose of this research is to consider Pancasila as a universal concept to be implemented in the international community because Pancasila is a concept not necessarily suitable only in Indonesia, but also in other states since Pancasila proposes the fundamental facet of nationalism and uphold humanity and social justice above all. This research reviews the definitions and core of Pancasila, correlations of the concept, and suppressing terrorism cases.
