Modern Educational Studies and Their Impact on Student's Health

Abstract

The aim of modern education systems is mainly focused upon providing education for the development of special skills for jobs. The systems also attempt to prepare students to develop into a whole person to be a good citizen and of good character. But, there has been an increase in the stress related illnesses among students, especially in U.S.A. The paper examines the positive and negative impacts of current system of educational studies on the lives of the students. It has been found that whereas the system offers more choices of careers including the development of awareness regarding environmental, political, and global issues, the increase in the pace due to information overload, pressure to succeed, undesirable distractions/temptations, and the need for instant gratification have contributed to an unhealthy mental state among students. Findings at Yale University and at Santa Clara University are cited. Wholesomeness in their behavior is disappearing and they are being disconnected from their real self, nature, and true beauty of life. In order to remedy the situation, we consider the need for highlighting spiritual awareness, the significance of family togetherness, and the ways to minimize disconnects between students’ hectic lives and nature/the sublime. We also explore avoiding an ethical/moral vacuum, which often attracts undesirable actions.
