Civil Society Organizations in Tamaulipas: Associative Density, Centrality, and Intermediation

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the organizational characteristics and levels of articulation among civil society organizations in Tamaulipas, Mexico. The starting point is the description of the political context in which civil society arises in Mexico. The discussion about the conceptual divergences and the different approaches of the characteristics that should be considered for this sector, in addition to the differences of the liberal and cooperative approach, along with the different definitions in the Latin American context are included. For analytical purposes, civil society organizations were studied, which are only part of the large group that encompasses this sector. The methodology consisted of the application of two surveys: in one, information was collected regarding the structure of the organization and its relationship with the public sector; In the second, information on intra and inter-sectoral relations was collected. The results obtained with the frequency analysis allowed identifying the characteristics of the organizations of this federative entity. While the network analysis allows us to analyze the levels of articulation in a graphic way, the measures of centrality and intermediation illustrate the level and quality of associative life in Tamaulipas.
