Ecofeminism : Theory and Practice

Abstract

Eco-feminism is a set of ideas within the environmental movements. A basic assumption of eco-feminism is that patriarchal societies tend to associate women with nature and debase or rape both. F.D Eaubonne first used the term eco-feminism in 1974. Since then eco-feminism has become a large but diverse movement encompassing thinkers from a wide range of perspectives with in the feminist movement and the environmental movement. This paper emphasizes the situated characters of women’s environmental action. Eco-feminism claims that the domination of women and of nature are intrinsically linked. The paper critically reviews the different trends in eco-feminism and seeks to relate the debates with the women’s and environmental movement in India. While outlining the most recent debates in eco-feminism it poses questions about the relevance of eco-feminism as against feminist environmentalism. The paper establishes that for a movement to be successful one needs to shift the issues and concerns from the periphery to the core wherein they are more likely to be heard and responded to.
