Infrastructural Aspects and Services Quality of Railway Stations in Tripura, India

Abstract

This paper focuses on infrastructural attributes and services of railway stations in rural Tripura. It aims to find out the growth process of the railway infrastructure of the rural environment in Tripura and highlights the future prospect of railway transport system. Presently the state has about 264 km long railway track including 26 railway stations where five pair of passengers trains are running in the state. At present, about 54 per cent railway stations of the state namely Churaibari, Nadiapur, Nalkata, S.K. Para, Jawaharnagar, Mungiakami, Sekerkote, Bishramganj, Garjee, Santirbazar, Belonia, Jalaibari, Manu Bazar and Sabroom are located in the rural part of Tripura. About 65,000 passengers travel per month through these stations. This railway network connected with many urban centres like Agartala, Dharmanagar, Udaipur, Belonia, Sabroom etc. Extensive field survey helps to understand the level of railway infrastructural attributes and services are available in Tripura. For measurement of infrastructural parameters, few instruments have been used e.g. digital distance, handheld Global Positing System (GPS) receiver etc. Secondary data has been collected from the office of the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Lumding, Area Manager, Badarpur, Commercial Inspector, Agartala. Presently infrastructural status of the railway in the rural areas of Tripura is in its infancy stage. Inadequate railway services are not being able to satisfy a large number of passengers. A significant proportion of the passengers opt to travel by train due to low cost, smooth, and less time-consuming transportation.
