International Community Mobilization Model for Disaster Impacted Communities in Developing Countries: A Theoretical Model

Abstract

The intensity of disasters is increasing as a result of changing climate and lack of international will. Rising conflicts and refugee crisis globally have created new challenges in disaster response in some parts of the world. Developing countries are seeing increasing waves of out-bound migration leaving local communities without financial and social capital to respond in the times of disasters. Reviewing literature on disaster response, it is evident that some groups in society, such as children and minorities, elderly are understudied by disaster researchers (Anderson 2005; Barnshaw 2006; Fothergill and Peek 2006; Peek 2008; Perry and Mushkatel 1986). The purpose of this study is to further the understanding of how disaster impacted communities can utilize technology and the proposed international community mobilization model to improve disaster response in developing countries.
