Feminist Discourses on Veiling: Wearing Hijab in Canada

Abstract

Providing key feminist discourses on the ‘phenomena of veiling’, I limit my analysis of the veil worn by Muslim women in societies and cultures across the globe. Beginning with a discussion on what veiling entails, key feminist arguments are presented. In order to give a glimpse of the existential realities of Muslim women who veil in Canada, I provide personal accounts, in the Canadian context. These personal narratives give voice to those who veil from an insider-perspective, as to what the reasons and perceptions are of those veiling.
