Encouraging Local Leaders to Foster Communities: A Response to the Global Orphan Crisis

Abstract

Across the world, there is a cry for orphaned children. Often shown in tattered clothing and malnourished, bloated bellies, these children need help. However, the help that has been given to these children around the world is not helpful. As a matter of fact, it is quite harmful. Studies show that over 80% of the “orphans” in places like Haiti, where I work and completed my research, have parents who would take care of them if they felt equipped. This statistic shows the importance of doing diligent and difficult work: partnering with locals to inspire locally-led development. In this paper, I share compelling evidence about the importance and necessity of partnering with locals to help children at-risk, and what communities are capable of when there are true partnerships.
