The Influence of Cultural Dimensions on Chinese Management Style and Employee Performance

Abstract

The purpose of the research paper is to investigate the influence of the Chinese management style at a Chinese firm in Zimbabwe using a case study of Golden Peacock Villa Hotel Mutare and the role culture plays influencing this leadership style. The objectives of the study were to analyse the influence on employee performance, the benefits, challenges, cultural dimension connection, and recommendations of the Chinese management style in a Chinese-Zimbabwean firm. To gather data the researcher used exploratory qualitative and quantitative approach, and also thematic data analysis methods. A combined 56 participants participated and responded to the questionnaires and interviews. The participants were comprised of managerial and non-managerial employees whom were selected using convenient and purposive sampling techniques. The major findings from the research were that the Chinese management style influences job inflexibility, communication challenges, lack of team work, high labour turn over, role ambiguity, and undervaluing of work done by the Zimbabwean-African elite workers, which are all indicators of poor employee performance. The researcher managed to obtain responses on the cultural dimension influence on Chinese management style and found that these cultural dimensions shape the Chinese management style and its hard-working ethics. The researcher therefore made recommendations based on these findings to the Golden Peacock Villa Hotel Mutare Organization and the government of Zimbabwe specifically to the regulatory and labour law enforcement boards.
