Traditional Non-Indigenous Populations of the Amazon : Social and Environmental Sustainability Practices

Abstract

This study addresses the practices of cultural, community building and sustainability in the ways of life of traditional non-indigenous populations that historically inhabit the unique scenario of the Amazon. The content of the article covers the practices of social, cultural, economic, and ecological sustainability as well as the conditions and perceptions about cultural awareness prevailing in the sociocultural organization of these populations. The analyzes and weightings are based on research results conducted by the authors and the theoretical lens that supports the debate is in line with the understanding of Sachs (2002) which understands sustainability not only from an environmental point of view, but from the articulation of the different dimensions that forge reality as a complex whole and multiple perspective of sustainability. The relevance of this theme highlights the Brazilian political moment, in which there are disputes and disagreements among members of civil society, representatives of educational institutions (researchers, teachers), public administration managers, community leaders, media, and other cultural intermediaries supporting or opposing the laws. protect the Amazon rainforest and are threatened by the country’s continuing political turmoil. The challenge is to reconcile the protection of the Amazon rainforest, sustainability, the protection of traditional populations with the realization of Brazil’s economic aspirations and to consolidate this issue as the responsibility of all Brazilian and world population.
