Nepal's New Constitution 2072 and Inclusion of Madhesh: A Study of Major English Dailies' Editorials

Abstract

This study analyzes editorials of major English broadsheet dailies in Nepal: The Kathmandu Post, Republica and The Rising Nepal, in the light of the promulgation of a new constitution in Nepal and political crisis raised in Madhesh, a flat land in Terai area. It overviews the opinion constructed by editorials of the dailies on the new constitution and voice of dissatisfaction from Madhesh. After a majority of lawmakers under the leadership of three big political parties in the Constituent Assembly (CA); Nepali Congress, Communist Party of Nepal and United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist, passed the new constitution on September 20, 2015 Madhesh based political parties, which boycott this process, continued to protest demanding rights to Madheshi people, who they feel were marginalized by the state since years. This research tries to study the prints’ editorials around Madhesh and role of the editors in facilitation of the constitution to solve the crisis in the low lands of the western region, focusing on the disgruntled issues in the constitution, which disappointed the Madhesh. The agitating Madheshi political parties had charged the mainstream media being bias, which had been disregarding the real demands and voice of Madhesh manipulating the ground reality. A content analysis method is used in the study focusing on policy analysis of editorials and its importance. How the particular issue and subjects of the current time were covered by editorials? How were the issues selected? Are the editorials socially responsible?
