The World is Our Oyster : Why It Is Important to Teach Geography

Abstract

Geography is not all about maps. It equips young people for an ever changing world, it allows them to make rational interconnections between the curriculum and develop a sense of place and purpose. Geography allows students to develop empathy for others and have a hands on approach to the world. It encourages students to be active citizens that have a voice and engages students to understand different cultures and practices around the world. It allows students to make justified judgments with the support of analysed data and fieldwork, furthermore geography underpins many career choices and it develops an awareness of people, places, environments, and social justice.
