Slow Fashion and Design Strategy in Circular Economy: Traditional Craft-based Textile Sector of Sri Lanka

Abstract

To understand the slow fashion with the design strategy of circular economy, this study tests the conceptual framework of slow fashion through investigating the design and product strategy of Dumbara Weaving – the hereditary craft textiles of Sri Lanka. The study deals with the circular economy notion of the sustainable production and consumption of Dumbara weaving through analyzing its age-old sustainable production methods and practices. Slow fashion concept strongly appreciates the natural circulation of material and energy consumption pattern and argues the benefit of traditional production and consumption practices over the modern production and consumption. In line with the slow fashion movement and the circular economy concept, this study is concerned with the nature and culture in the process of production and consumption of Dumbara weaving while understanding how this textile tradition has endured hundreds of years.
