Declining Foreign Funds for Non-governmental Organizations and Careers of Field Workers in Bangladesh

Abstract

Non-governmental Organization (NGO) activities have grown into a movement in Bangladesh - eventually playing a very significant role in the nation’s development process. This paper looks at the field-workers employed by local NGOs in Bangladesh. The main objective of the study is to find out funding patterns, project continuation, and their effects on the careers of field workers. A total of fifty respondents were randomly selected from ten local NGOs of Rajshahi City Corporation Area (in the north-western part of Bangladesh). It was found that foreign funding for NGOs had been declining in Bangladesh due to its transformation to middle-income economy. A large number of field-based workers lost their jobs from local NGOs due to a funding crisis. Current development workers are worried about their jobs. Their lives and livelihoods are at risk. Local NGOs have been playing a vital role in the country’s socio-economic development, especially in health, education, micro-financing, and women’s development. These field worker services are still very much needed.
