Backyard Vegetable Gardening: A Case of Select Filipino Households

Abstract

This participatory research investigates the manifestation of backyard gardening among 102 households in remote areas in Barangay Llavac Real, Quezon. This study was conducted from January 2017 to 2018. Backyard gardening provides several vegetables and home-based businesses. It helps to diminish hunger and become an additional source of income of the family. Moreover, it promotes healthy eating lifestyle and community development. It promotes organic farming among households. Since this alternative farming was efficient in producing vegetables that maximizes backyard space and promotes healthy lifestyles, formal training and seminars to promote proper planting among households and strengthening the support of local government units and non-government organizations was recommended. Lastly, the selection of healthy seedling, weather condition, soil analysis, and water resources should be considered for future manifestation of this this study to enable greater bounty at harvests.
