The Potential of New Forms of Communications Supported by Social Media

Abstract

In contemporary society, characterized by transformation and dynamic communication, processes and mechanisms of knowledge advancement as well as processes of inquiry to promote learning how to teach and learn. By combining collaborative learning with an appropriate model of knowledge construction to underpin the study, the aim of this research is better to better understand the process. Blogs, wikis and video-sharings sites can engage students in promoting their works while considering and sharing other’s knowledge. The participatory culture, favored by this new forms of communication, might taken the form of affiliation, centered on student background, interest, connections with media. Such opportunities might promote the chances to make learning personally meaningful, collaborative and socially relevant. Education is one of the fastest-growing economic and social sectors in the world, and the use of new technologies is an integral and driving component of that growth. Multimedia applications have long been popular on the Web, and these combined with streaming audio and video podcasts, such as myriad music sites or video sites like YouTube are opening up different opportunities for educators. Audio chat using Skype has become common, and web conferencing is used for teaching and for creating podcasts. Diverse forms of podcasting have been used to provide authentic experiences to students by exposing them to innovative leaning activities. Podcasting also holds great potential for allowing students to articulate their understanding of ideas and concepts, and to share the outcomes with an audience they value, such as their peers.
