Key Considerations for Becoming an Anti-racist Teacher

Abstract

Our students’ connection to our school community can be strengthened or weakened by their classroom experiences. It’s important that educators are proactively designing and delivering equitable and inclusive learning environments that honors the diverse identities of all of our students. In order to do this, educators should actively combat racism in their classrooms. This workshop’s goals are to give educators motivation, resources, and strategies to do the incredibly challenging work of making our curriculum and lessons more inclusive as we move towards incorporating more antiracist ideals. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to explore the influence of race and culture on your own personal and professional attitudes and behaviors. You’ll identify appropriate anti-racist resources to incorporate into your curriculum and develop new and additional approaches to teaching. Lastly, you’ll be able to identify and counteract bias and stereotyping in learning materials. I offer this workshop as a point of entry for instructors from a variety of backgrounds, disciplines, identity positions, and levels of teaching experience who wish to engage in this work. This workshop will provide strategies, examples, and resources to provide educators with a theoretical framework upon which to make meaningful, intentional choices in their classrooms.
