Alfonsos’ Choices, El Cid, and the Transition to Spanish Lyric Poetry

Abstract

In the Poema del Mío Cid there is a development of the epic hero that echoes what Christians prefer to think as the divine right of kings through the ages. Beginning with Alfonso VI, the royal family made a point of rescuing the Iberian Peninsula from its Muslim invaders. Following this effort came the literary works that expressed the monarchs’ desires to preserve their national pride by collecting the manuscripts that defined their power. In this study, the most prominent monarchs to be discussed are the Alfonso kings named for Alfonso I. Alfonso VI, Alfonso VII, Alfonso VIII, Alfonso IX and, most notably, Alfonso X “el sabio” were the greatest proponents of Castilian documents. The intention of this study is to reveal the literature through Spanish lyric poetry supported by these monarchs who believed in divine intervention.
