Identity Can Be Problematic: German Technical and Vocational Education and Training Students and Their Narrative Stories by Risk Society Theory

Abstract

Civic engagement has long been on a contentious site in which the forms, initiative, and tactics are contested. Specifically, civic engagement can be un-civic and anti-civic with regard to both its goals and its means. Basically, civic engagement is rooted in a fundamental orientation towards reciprocity. However, young people have been found less likely than those in earlier generations to exhibit core citizenship values in the era. Understand what are the forcing to foster civic engagement become an essential topic especially in a risk society. In January 2018, 40 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students were recruited in Germany regarding their views of Brexit. The crisis of Brexit has already passed, but the interviewees had narrated their experiences of citizenship under the shelter of European Union and those experiences should be underestimated and be further analyzed. The notion of Brexit matches with the features of risk society theory. Nevertheless, it could also be regarded as an alternative way-out for the longstanding debate of identity crisis among the European. The preliminary findings show that identity is a core issue for the youth to influence their consideration of certain forms of civic engagement. The experiences from these Germany students can be viewed as a mirror for Hong Kong to find a way out of the current chaos.
