Teaching Chinese Students About Democracy in Australia

Abstract

This paper is about the challenges that need to be overcome to teach the theory, history, and practices of liberal democracies to Chinese students studying in Australia. The primary challenge is the most obvious: the students’ cultural background only allows many of them to see democracy as undisciplined chaos. However, using the Actor-network theory to observe and describe classroom interactions, this paper suggests a number of interesting strategies a teacher could use to foster a more critical engagement in the students.
