Abstract
This workshop will examine the use of making visual/sculptural art to discuss aspects of culture and structures such as quinceaneras and patriarchy. Using resources and practices from within the community and environment, we can formulate discussion/learning/teaching topics in a group setting. The workshop will provide participants the opportunity to create recuerdos (a traditional keepsake given away at a celebration to remember the event) using ribbons, embellishments, glue, mirrors, mini-statues, etc. The traditional ribbon that identifies what is to be remembered reads, “F*ck Patriarchy Por Vida.” The activity exemplifies how a culturally familiar practice and cultural production of something like quinceaneras and recuerdos can be used in an educational setting or exhibition to provoke dialogue and critical thinking about larger social structures, practices, and ideas.
