The Humanist Move: Revive the Past to Change the Present

Abstract

There is a cultural revolution happening in American academia right now. Science, business and informatics are replacing the humanities in the core of the educational system. And yet, the studia humanitatis, the Humanities, still can talk to the new generations of students and help them and us to understand and change the present by looking back to our past. This paper gives examples of the meaningful interconnection between present and past and the importance of Humanities still today by showing how one of the popular American TV series, House of Cards, tackles a problem that has been at the center of a long-lasting debate from Dante Alighieri (Divine Comedy) and Niccolò Machiavelli (The Prince) to Francis Bacon (The Essays): the problematic relationship between power and knowledge and—to use Bacon’s words—the ancient “secret of command” hiding behind it.
