Consumption of Patriarchy

Abstract

Given the ongoing movements to advance women’s rights and end general violence against women, including the #metoo movement, the topic of women’s’ oppression within the broader patriarchal system is more than relevant. This is especially significant when we see the symbiotic nature between patriarchal systems and neoliberalism (see Collins and Rothe 2017; 2019; Rothe and Collins 2017; 2019). This proposal is for a discussion of patriarchy and neoliberalism and women’s own complicit role, willingly or not, in the reproduction of their own oppression. Moreover, there is a general lack of scholarship and informed discussions on these issues. The foundation for these discussions begins with a brief summary of the authors’ research on this topic that includes points listed below and more in order to generate further discussions and views. Handouts are provided with talking points to guide the discussion. Undoubtedly, capitalism and today’s neoliberalism ideology, consumption, and commodification are topics that merit our attention, as we witness a time of expanding global inequalities.
