The Hand Pan: A Hybrid Music Instrument

Abstract

The hand pan is a recent innovation in music instruments, only about 20 years old. It is a cross between the steel pan (steel drum) from Trinidad, the Nigerian udu drum, and Indian claypot drum, the ghatam. A unique aspect of the hand pan is that it is designed to play pitched notes, musical scales and melodies using only hands. Prior to the hand pan, there was no instrument designed to create pitched notes and melodies using only hands. Hence, it is a remarkable innovation. The presenter will introduce the hand pan and demonstrate its various aspects followed by a performance and hands-on audience participation.
