Mmadukaejiaka as the Basis for Igbo Philosophy of Human Well-being

Abstract

The quest for human well being is an all time desirable value and equally natural with man especially in our age when human life and existence is constantly under threat due largely to disappointments and frustrations that characterised human life. Scientific cum technological innovations, improved infrastructure and improved economy have been suggested as fundamentals for human well-being. As much as these are necessary for uplifting and improving the general well-being of man in the society, this paper is of the opinion that something more basic is required which makes possible the reality and the right application of these other factors. The author proposes Mmadukaejiaka as the basis for the Igbo philosophy of human well-being. Mmadukaejiaka literally means we derive strength from and prevail by the people and it is within this philosophy that the popular African dictum of “I am because we are and since we are, therefore I am” is made intelligible. Based on the value and virtue of communality, for no one is an island, this philosphy provides the resources, solidarity, synergy, togetherness, cooperation and encouragement needed to lead a meaningful and fulfilling life. Using the philosophical methods of analysis and hermaneutics, the paper argues the above claims and concludes that as much as money, fame and personal achievements may provide confidence in one’s life and aspirations, they may and do fail. At this point one needs the solidarity, encouragement and helps of the people because Igwe bu ike (unity is strength) and mmadukaejiaka.
