Abstract
Teaching linguistics to English non-native students of the English Teaching Major is a challenge but a very necessary part of their training program. Linguistics is important to language teachers for several reasons. Good theoretical bases help instructors explain the target language rules and processes in more straightforward fashion, facilitating student learning. It also enhances the teachers’ professional development as they are able to device strategies to cater to individual needs. The purpose of this study is to explore the role of linguistics courses in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction at a Costa Rican public university. A qualitative-descriptive research was carried out which considered the opinions of the senior students and professors of the English Teaching major regarding the importance of linguistics in EFL instruction. Study findings include the pros and cons of the teaching of specific linguistics courses to language learners in an EFL context. Results also show the importance of theoretical foundations for the professionalization of the future teachers. Thus, general conclusions suggest that linguistic literacy is a key requirement for a well-rounded language instructor.
