Sustainability in the Persian Garden and the Works of Sheikh Baha'i: Identifying the Parameters of Creating Sustainable Green Spaces

Abstract

A historical review of the components of sustainability of the Persian garden in the past, especially in the Safavid era, shows that these gardens, as a complete structure, show a close relationship between cultural and natural context and a sign of adaptation and alignment of human and nature needs. The purpose of this study is to analyze the components of sustainability in the Persian garden and the works of Sheikh Baha’i to identify the parameters of creating a sustainable green space. The method used in this study is analytical and descriptive with a historical and deductive approach. The method of data collection has been purposefully collected using library tools and studies of research conducted in this field and then reviewed. Therefore, studying the two dimensions of environmental and social sustainability and adapting it to the works of Sheikh Baha’i, help to identify the parameters of creating a sustainable green space in contemporary cities. The results show that the components of sustainability in the Persian garden and the works of Sheikh Baha’i can be used as new strategies to create a sustainable green space and the study of sustainable and physical aspects of Persian historical gardens can be used as a suitable model for today’s design. They should be considered with regard to sustainability and energy saving in green spaces.
