Abstract
The current research investigates whether Iranian EFL learners are aware of consumerist ideologies presented in textbooks. To this end, from 20 language classes, 320 Iranian EFL teachers and learners were selected through convenience sampling. Fairclough’s (2017) model of language and power was used to design a questionnaire on the use of cultural force in pedagogical textbooks. The aim was to find out the properties of those dimensions of cultural transmission from West to Iranian context in the textbooks. The findings revealed that the cultural values like making friends, parties, vacations, and interpersonal relationships are highly affected by the available English textbooks. The findings also showed that ELT teachers were not able to explain the western culture to the learners. The findings verified that the most of the Iranian learners were not fully aware of the underlying western cultural values in the textbooks.
